This City Was Built out at Sea, but Now It’s Completely Abandoned

This is the small and compact city of Hashima Island located off the coast of Japan. Otherwise known as Gunkanjima ( Meaning Battleship ) because of the islands appearance, this concrete jungle now lye’s in ruins after being abandoned. Concrete was used in its construction for Typhoon protection, and at its peak the island reached a population of 5,239. When coal was discovered on the island in 1877, it quickly grew to become a thriving self contained community, however the gradual decline in coal and the rising use of petroleum led to the islands decline in 1974.
