Esther Honi is a freelance journalist who lives in Kansas City, Missouri, U.S. In order to find out whether or not a global beauty standard really does exist she sent a photograph of herself to 40 well known photoshop wizards and enthusiasts, all from various countries around the world. She sent the photo with a simple request “make me beautiful”. The title of the project is Before & After

The responses she got were sometimes heavily altered images, other times the alterations were far more subtle. All of them however offer a fascinating insight on what is considered beautiful in different countries. Did this project help her find the answer she was looking for?

“What I’ve learned from the project is this: Photoshop [may] allow us to achieve our unobtainable standards of beauty, but when we compare those standards on a global scale, achieving the ideal remains all the more illusive.
