These are the incredible and intricately cut paper designers of Bovey Lee, an artist based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Lee was born in Hong Kong and has been practicing Chinese calligraphy since she was ten years old, which is where a lot of her influence comes from when creating these detailed pieces of paper art.
Each one of these designs starts life as a single sheet of Chinese xuan (rice) paper and backed with silk which are both renewable and eco-friendly materials. Using basic tools such as a cutting mat, X-acto knife and blades, staples, clips and paperweights, Lee creates these designs by cutting free hand without the aid of rulers or stencils.
Through her work Lee aims to explore the tension between man and the environment in the context of power, sacrifice, and survival.
