The 10 Most Expensive Artworks Ever Sold

With the current state of the worlds economy, many of the worlds richest people are investing their money in places other than the bank, one of them being the world of super expensive art. Just this year in 2015 the most expensive ever painting was sold for an incredible $300 million.

As of 2015 here are the 10 most expensive artworks ever sold. Please note that all of the prices have been adjusted to reflect inflation – the artworks that sold for $70 million in the 90’s are now worth $140 million!.

10. Bal du moulin de la Galette – $141 million

Painted in 1876 by French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir this painting sold for $78.1 million in 1990 which is now equivalent to $141 million!

9. Three Studies of Lucian Freud – $144.2 million

Three Studies of Lucian Freud was painted in 1969 by Irish artist Francis Bacon. It was sold on November 12, 2013 at an auction house in New York.

8. Portrait of Dr. Gachet – $148.9 million

An artist and painting style you’re probably fairly familiar with, this painting by Vincent van Gogh sold in May 15, 1990 to private collector Ryoei Saito.

Painted by Australian artist Gustav Klimt 1907 this artwork sold in a private sale on June 18, 2006.

Painted by Willem de Kooning in 1953 and sold in November 18, 2006 to a private buyer.

5. No. 5, 1948 – $163.8 million

Painted in 1948 by influential American painter Jackson Pollock the artwork was sold on November 6th, 2006.

4. Les Femmes d’Alger(“Version O”) – $179.4 million

Pablo Picasso created this painting in 1951 and it was sold to a private buyer on May 11th 2015 at an auction house in New York.

Painted in 1951 by American painter Mark Rothko this artwork sold in 2011 to a private buyer.

Painted in 1893 by French artist and Post-Impressionist painter Paul Cézanne this painting was sold in 2011 to the State of Qatar.

1. Nafea Faa Ipoipo(When Will You Marry?) – $300 million

Painted by artist Paul Gauguin in 1892 this oil painting was sold privately in 2015 for an unknown amount, although according to the New York Times is was around the $300 million mark.
