Thousands of Glowworms Give New Zealand’s Waitomo Caves a Cosmic Appearance

If you’re ever lucky enough to visit New Zealand’s Waitomo caves then you’ll be sure to see something that you’re unlikely to see anywhere else in the world and it’s all down to one of the most amazing insects in the world, the glowworm. The tiny insects give off a phosphorescent glow and just so happen to like Waitomo’s limestone caves, transforming the environment into a truly surreal spectacle.

Over the last year photographer Shaun Jeffers has spent his time taking back and fourth trips to Waitomo’s Ruakuri Cave in order to try and capture this otherworldly spectacle at its best and the end result is photos so amazing they look like they’re taken straight from the set of the movie Avatar

For some the idea of being inside a cave brings up claustrophobic thoughts however look up at the ceiling in this cave and there’s an entire illuminated cosmos above you. You can see more of Jeffers work here.
