Rubik’s Cube-Solving Robot Will Make You Feel Inadequate

Rubik’s Cube world champ Feliks Zemdegs can solve the famous six-sided puzzle in 5.88 seconds. This is a mind-blowing feat — that is, until you see CubeStomer3 in action.

This robot boasts a half dozen LEGO Mindstorms-based hands, which can help it solve a Rubik’s cube in less than three seconds.

Unveiled in February at LEGO World 2014 in Copenhagen, this is the third edition of the CubeStormer robot. The robot uses a Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone, eight LEGO Mindstorms EV3 programming bricks and a variety of other Mindstorms pieces.

The robot effectively ingests the Rubik’s Cube, then rapidly spins it around until the puzzle is solved.

According to Metro, the robot uses the camera to photograph each side of the cube and determine the position of all the colors. It then uses that information to calculate, in real time, the minimum moves needed to solve the cube.

Built by Mike Dobson and David Gilday, the new robot is faster than the last CubeStormer, which took about 5.3 seconds to solve the cube.

As for world record holder Zemdegs, he can take some comfort in the fact that his feat looks more impressive to the naked eye. See his record-breaking solve below.
