The Evolution Of Super Mario

Our favourite game character has had a fair amount of different looks over the past 30 years but then that’s to be expected going from the original NES game to the current HD Wii U.

So lets take a trip through time and follow the good-doing plumber through his various fazes. Not all games including Mario are listed because there’s actually over 200 of them! But we’ve listed the ground breaking ones which change the way we think about Mario today.

Super Mario Bros. (1985)
The classic game that started it all.

Super Mario Bros. 2 – Japan (1986)

Super Mario Bros. 2 – USA (1987)
This game is often regarded as the black sheep of the series because of its strange game play.

Super Mario Bros. 3 (1988)
Where Mario first donned the Tanooki suit.

Super Mario Land (1989)
Mario’s first adventure on the Original Game Boy.

Super Mario World (1990)
First game on the SNES, also debuted Yoshi.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (1992)

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island (1995)
The only Mario game where you cant actually control Mario.

Super Mario 64 (1996)
The first game for the N64 and the first 3D Mario.

Super Mario Sunshine (2002)
The first game for the GameCube, many regard it as the most underrated Mario game.

New Super Mario Bros. (2006)
Mario goes back to basics in this side-scrolling adventure for the Nintendo DS.

Super Mario Galaxy (2007)
Mario goes galactic in this adventure which many regard as the best in the series.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii (2009)

Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010)
Some consider this the pinnacle of the Mario series.

Super Mario 3D Land (2011)
The Tanooki Suit comes back for this one, this is Mario’s first 3D adventure on a portable console (3DS).

New Super Mario Bros. U (2013)
Mario makes a stunning debut in HD.
