This Teacher Taught His Students a Powerful Lesson about Privilege

This teacher taught his class a powerful lesson about privilege and life that they will never forget, and all he used was some scrunched up paper and a bin.

A high school teacher decided he was going to teach his students a lesson on privilege. He gave each of them a piece of paper and told them to scrunch it up into a ball.

He then placed the recycling bin at the front of the classroom.

He then told them this – “You all represent the country’s population, everyone in the country has a chance to become wealthy.”

“To move into the upper class, you just have to get your ball of paper inside the bin whilst remaining in your seat.”

Of course the students at the back immediately complained that it was “unfair” as the people at the front had a better chance than them.

They all took a shot. As you would expect, the majority of the front row got theres in but only a few people from the back did.

He then told them ” The closer you were, there better your odds were of getting in. Thats what privilege is. Notice how nobody at the front complained about it being unfair.”

“This is also because the people at the front were never aware they were at an advantage in the first place. They were born into it. They only see whats between them and their goal.”

“Your job as students who are receiving an education is to be aware of your privilege. You should use this privilege known as ‘education’ to do your best in life whilst still looking out for those in the rows behind you.”
