Every year more than 500 million tons of rice is consumed worldwide. It has become a staple of half the worlds population and been a huge help towards helping prevent famines. Because of this huge demand there are thousands of flooded rice paddies where the rice is grown, and they make for some truly spectacular locations like no other in the world.
The pattern they create when viewed from up high makes the appear as if they are broken mirrors, reflecting the sunlight and sky. Rice doesn’t need to be flooded to grow but it does help – it needs a lot of water and prevents weeds growing. Here are 26 mesmerising photographs of rice fields that look like shards of glass.
