Student and volunteer walker at an animal shelter in Philadelphia, Kayla Filoon recently decided to adopt a pit bull named Russ the moment she set eyes on him, instantly sensing that the two of them shared a special connection and she was right.
“He came in as a stray, and he was really beat up,” Filoon told The Dodo. He was missing fur on his ears, tail and was severely underweight. When Russ arrived at the shelter he just sat there calmly, staring at Kayla and it was at that moment that she knew that she needed to help him.
The shelter Kayla works at had recently just put 15 dogs to sleep so she knew she had to act fast, “Any dog had a chance of being put down, especially the ones who were sicker, and Russ was definitely one of them.” With this fresh in her mind the very next morning Kayla went straight to the shelter and filled out the adoption forms so she could take Russ home.
Now the two of them live together and Russ couldn't be more grateful for Kayla, so much so that he can't stop hugging her. A photo of Russ hugging Kayla, shared by her niece on Facebook recently went viral for showing just how important and rewarding it can be to adopt a dog.

And ever since then Russ can't stop hugging and snuggling with Kayla who seems happy to oblige!
One evening Kayla was sitting on the sofa and doing her homework whilst Russ was looking for ways to get some much needed attention...
And in the end managed to snuggle right up next to her - and the photo went viral!
Kayla hopes that the photo will inspire others to adopt a dog, especially one as loving as Russ.
