Freddy the Tortoise Survives Injury After Receiving World’s First 3D Printed Shell

Normally a tortoise with injuries as severe as Freddy’s wouldn’t survive, but through his fighting spirit and with the aid of 3D printing he’s managed to survive after getting caught in a bush fire in Brazil. Overcoming all the odds and thanks to a pioneering group of individuals Freddy is now the proud owner of the world’s first 3D printed shell.

According to Designer Cicero Moraes, a volunteer of the Sao Paulo based group, Freddy is the first animal in the world to receive a fully rebuilt shell using 3D computer software. The shell was created based on various images taken of Freddy and then sent to Dr Paulo Miamoto, a dental surgeon, who then used a 3D printer to create Freddy’s shell. As you can see from the pictures below, he’s more than happy with it – it’s a perfect fit!

Things were looking bleak for Freddy the tortoise after he was badly injured in a Bush fire

His shell was badly damaged so a group of volunteers got together and set about making him a new one

Using 3D software and various images taken of Freddy they set about designing a new shell

Which was then 3D printed. Turns out it was a perfect fit, although it needed a little colour!

So the team hand painted Freddy’s shell to make it look as realistic as possible

And now he’s the proud owner of a new shell!

The four vets, one dental surgeon and 3D designer that made Freddy’s shell call themselves The Animal Avengers

Because their heroic efforts mean that Freddy can look forward to a long and happy future!
