Cities Around the World Get a Tokyo Inspired Makeover

With a population of 13.62 million Tokyo is Japan’s busiest city made famous for it’s bright neon lights that illuminate the city at night transforming it into a place unlike any other on earth. Previously explored by photographers such as Liam Wong this time Japanese architect Daigo Ishii has created a series of clever GIFs that explore what it would be like if other cities around the world took on Tokyo’s unique characteristics.

The result of applying Tokyo’s aesthetic to the rest of the world is both fascinating and a little terrifying at the same time as once baron and empty streets are now filled with in-your-face signage and adverts as far as the eye can see.

Through doing so Ishii explores the idea of locality and how taking certain elements from one culture and placing them into another alters that place or changes its identity all together. Whilst Tokyo is one amazing place it’s probably best that it’s signage and bright neon lights stay put, it’s not quite the same after all.
