Black Model Highlights Lack of Diversity in Fashion Industry by Recreating Its Most Iconic Campaigns

Born in western Africa’s Liberia and now an LA-based model Deddeh Howard is on a mission to raise awareness about the lack of diversity in the modelling industry and she’s doing so through her brilliant photo series titled Black Mirror in which she flawlessly recreates some of the world’s most famous and iconic fashions campaigns, both old and new.

Taking on the likes of modelling stars such as Kendall Jenner, Kate Moss and Gigi Hadid, the series was inspired by Howard’s own experiences in the fashion industry when being interviewed by fashion model agencies and “immediately being compared to that one or two black model that they had on the roster,” she writes on her website.

Despite the modelling agencies telling her that they loved her look, they couldn’t represent her because they already had a black model despite the fact that they had a surplus of white models. Inspired by this Black Mirror shows us what it would look like if the fashion industry was more diverse, as she asks the important question “why can’t the big brands not embrace our diversity more and give all of us visibility? With this Black Mirror project I hope to show the world that it is time for all of us being seen.” You can follow howard on Instagram and her website.
