As with each passing year National Geographic continues to display one of the most diverse and impressive arrays of photography in the world and now that the votes are in for the National Geographic 2017 Travel Photographer of the Year contest, the same can be said for its winners.
Whether it’s a breathtaking shot from above or a more intimate moment of solitude focusing on an individual the final winners are impressive to say the least – narrowed down by the judges from more than 15,000 entries.
The three categories in which prizes were up for grabs in this years competition were nature, people and cities with a shot from Mexico’s Tapiro Velasco winning overall prize for a photo showing a volcano erupting as a dramatic lightning storm forms above. First, second and third for each category received $2,500, $750 and $500 for their entries whilst Velasco also one a 10-day-trip for two to the Galápagos Archipelago.
