Ernest Warther Carves a Sculpture of 511 Interconnected Pliers from a Single Block of Wood

As the story of Ernest “Mooney” Warther goes, he was only a boy growing up in Ohio when he met a man who taught him how to carve a pair of working pliers from a single piece of wood using only 10 cuts. Warther then went on to become one of the most famous wood carvers that America has ever seen.

Over time Warther’s interested shifted from carving to locomotives but before that happened he created a tree of 511 interconnected pliers that is carved from a single block of wood – pretty much taking the idea of the 10 cut single plier and scaling it up to 31,000 cuts. The most insane part about this? the fact that each branch can move just like a functional pair of pliers. Check out the video above to see it in action.
