The thing scientists love most about experiments in a lab is that it’s controlled. Other than the reaction or outcome of the experiment which even then can be predicted or hypothesised they pretty much know what’s going to happen. But what happens when they step out of the lab and conduct experiments in the real world? according to the work of Jim Jourdane the answer is complete chaos.
The French illustrator has been collecting scientist’s funny field work fails since 2015, shared through the #Fieldworkfails and has now turned some of the funniest ones into humorous drawings for everyone to laugh at.
Jourdane interviewed the scientists whose stories made it into the book and quickly realised one common theme throughout – there’s often a misconception from the public about what they get up to. Jourdane hopes that his illustrations will be make science more accessible to everyone, from “Eleven year old children, my grandmother, friends, scientists,” he writes.
