8 Contemporary Frank Lloyd Wright buildings are now on UNESCO list

8 Contemporary Frank Lloyd Wright buildings have been deemed “of outstanding universal value” and are part off the UNESCO World Heritage List now. These are the first 8 works of modern American architecture to make that list and what is amazing is the buildings themselves which really set the tone for a new age in architecture today.

So, which buildings? More specifically, the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, Fallingwater in Pennsylvania, Hollyhock House in Los Angeles, the Herbert and Katherine Jacobs House from Wisconsin and Wright’s own home and studio called Taliesin. There are also The Taliesin West in Arizona and the Unity Temple and Robie House in Chicago.

So, if you’ve read so far and don’t know much about the modern American architecture, you might wonder who is this Frank Lloyd Wright. He WAS a prominent American architect and interior designer always working on building harmony with humanity and its environment through his designs. He was one of the first of the Prairie School of architecture, an architectural style of the late 19th – 20th, marked by the use of horizontal lines, horizontal windows, with hipped roofs and really broad eaves.

Below you will find some of his best works and they won’t go easy on you, but rather strike you hard with their elaborated beauty and unique design.

2. Fallingwater (completed in 1939), Western Pennsylvania

This is Wright’s most famous house and it totally encapsulate his vision of bringing humanity close to nature through the design of houses. This house was actually built on atop a waterfall and it clearly echoes the rocky surroundings, don’t you think?

4. Hollyhock House, Los Angeles

It looks much like a Mayan pyramid, doesn’t it? This is because, during the 1920s, Wright was experiencing with new regional influences like the Maya heritage or the Spanish Revival style. This building below is today the heart of the Barnsdall Art Park
